The Ultimate Land Based Guide to Fishing Lake Macquarie, New South Wales: Top 5 Spots Unveiled

Lake Macquarie, on the New South Wales Central Coast, is one of the state's premier land-based fishing destinations. Surrounded by sheltered bays, jetties and rocky points, it holds a genuinely wide spread of species — from bream and flathead in the shallows to luderick around the weed beds. Here are five of the best spots on the lake, what to target at each, and how to fish them.

1. Murray's Beach

Tucked away on the southeastern shores of the lake, Murray's Beach is a quiet spot with clear water and plenty of fish life. Bream, flathead and tailor are all on the cards here — light tackle with soft plastics or live bait like prawns and bloodworms works well for bream and flathead, while tailor respond to metal lures or pilchards, especially near the surface in the early morning or late evening. Fish the jetties and submerged structure for bream, sandy bottoms for flathead.

2. Myuna Outlet

Where Myuna Bay merges with the main lake, this spot offers a genuine mix of freshwater and saltwater fishing. Australian bass, estuary perch and mullet are the main targets — surface lures and soft plastics work well for bass and perch around snags and fallen timber, while mullet take bread or dough fished under a float. The transition zones, where currents meet, are the most productive areas, particularly early morning or late afternoon.

3. Belmont Bay

On the eastern side of the lake, Belmont Bay is a sheltered spot holding whiting, bream and flathead. Light tackle with live worms or nippers accounts for whiting, bream take soft plastics or prawns, and flathead respond to soft plastics or live bait fished on the bottom. Shallow seagrass beds and sandy flats are best for whiting and flathead, while bream tend to sit closer to structure.

4. Mannering Park

On the lake's western shore, Mannering Park is a peaceful, productive spot for blackfish (luderick), bream and tailor. Green weed on a float rig is the standard approach for blackfish, while bream and tailor can be taken on a range of bait and lures. Weed beds and rocky areas hold blackfish, while bream and tailor tend to sit around jetties and deeper points.

5. Gwandalan

On the western side of the lake, Gwandalan offers solid shore fishing for luderick, whiting and flathead. Green weed on a float rig is the go-to for luderick, whiting take live worms well, and flathead respond to soft plastics or bottom-fished bait. Fish the rocky shorelines for luderick, sandy flats at high tide for whiting, and drop-offs for flathead.

Get Out There

Lake Macquarie's spread of spots reflects just how much life the lake holds. From the quiet shores of Murray's Beach to the western banks at Gwandalan, each location offers something different. Match your technique to the area and the species you're chasing, and it's hard to have a bad session here.
