The Bottom Bug

Most soft plastics look like a lure. The Bottom Bug looks like lunch. At 65mm it sits right in the size window bream and flathead key in on around structure — small enough to get eaten first go with a claw kick and tail flutter that keeps moving even when you're not.

It's built around one job: mimicking the yabbies, nippers and small crays that estuary fish dig out of sand, weed and rock. Cast it up against a rock wall or oyster lease, let it settle, and give it the odd twitch — that's when it earns its keep.

How to rig it

A 1/16–1/8oz jighead is the simplest way to fish it and covers most situations. Working a weed edge or snaggy structure, rig it weedless and let it sink on a slow fall. On open sand or a running tide, a Carolina or running sinker rig keeps it working just above the bottom without dragging.

What it catches

Bream and flathead are the main targets, but it's taken plenty of estuary perch, whiting, redfin and the odd golden perch as a bycatch when worked slow along the bottom.
