2 Hook Hand-Tied Whiting Dropper Rigs
BAIT IT. CAST IT. FIND THE WHITING.
Whiting rigs don't need to be complicated.
You need a reliable trace, long-shank hooks that suit natural baits, and a simple setup that keeps your bait working close to the bottom.
The ReproBaits 2-Loop Whiting Dropper Rig is hand-tied around exactly that idea.
Each 700mm (70 cm +/-) rig uses 12lb (5.4kg) Platypus Pretest line fitted with two #4 red long-shank hooks, red luminescent beads and red silicone knot protectors.
A dedicated sinker loop lets you choose the sinker style and weight that suits your fishing conditions.
Add some beachworms, pipis or prawn and cast out along weedbeds, surf gutters, or edges of sandy bottom. This is the best way to find whiting if you haven't figured them out quite yet.
TWO BAITS IN THE WATER
Whiting spend much of their time searching for food across sand flats, tidal channels and beach gutters.
They're often moving along in groups which means finding feeding fish is just as important as choosing the right bait.
A two-hook dropper rig lets you present two natural baits at once, giving fish more than one opportunity to find your offering. The bottom hook is often the one with the most bites or strikes from whiting.
Each rig features:
2 dropper loops.
2 red long-shank hooks.
2 red llumo beads per rig.
2 red silicone knot protector attractors per rig.
2 bait presentations working together.
It's a straightforward setup for anglers who want to cover water. It's a great rig to explore different fishing spots and spend less time tying rigs.
#4 RED LONG-SHANK HOOKS
Whiting have relatively small mouths and commonly feed on worms, small crustaceans and shellfish found along sandy bottoms.
That's why this rig uses two size #4 red long-shank hooks.
They're well suited to presenting popular whiting baits, including:
-
Beachworms
-
Bloodworms
-
Tubeworms
-
Pipis
-
Nippers
-
Prawn bits without the shell
The longer hook shank gives you room to thread worms and other narrow baits along the hook, helping create a natural presentation.
It also provides additional shank to grip when removing hooks from a landed fish.
The red finish adds a subtle point of colour beside your bait.
Nothing complicated.
Just a practical hook choice for traditional Australian whiting fishing.
12LB PLATYPUS PRETEST LINE
A good bait rig needs to balance strength with presentation.
Too much heavy tackle can make fishing for smaller whiting unnecessarily cumbersome.
Too little strength can become a problem when fishing around surf wash, tidal currents and larger fish.
Big fish don't get big by being stupid so we use the lightest line we can use while still being a tough contender with the big whiting. The best way to get those donkey whiting in is to use your drag wisely if you get one reaching 50cm.
Each ReproBaits 2-Loop Dropper Rig is hand-tied using 12lb (approximately 5.4kg) Platypus Pretest fishing line.
The 700mm (70cm) overall length provides a practical, compact setup for presenting two baits from the beach, estuary or even the boat.
It's a versatile choice for targeting:
-
Sand whiting
-
Yellowfin whiting
-
King George whiting
-
Other whiting species found in Australian coastal waters
The rig may also attract bream, dart and other small inshore species feeding on the same natural baits.
RED LUMINESCENT BEADS
Each rig features red luminescent beads to add a small visual feature to the bait presentation.
Whiting often feed in conditions where visibility changes throughout the day.
Think:
-
Slightly discoloured estuary water
-
Deeper beach gutters
-
Early morning sessions
-
Late afternoon fishing
-
Overcast conditions
The luminescent beads provide an additional visual point near the bait that may help attract the attention of investigating fish.
They're not a replacement for good bait or finding the right water.
The bait still does the real work.
The beads simply add another element to the presentation.
RED SILICONE KNOT PROTECTOR
A small detail but a useful one.
Each rig includes a red silicone knot protector to help protect the rig's connection point.
It's a simple addition to a hand-tied fishing rig providing extra protection where the tackle connects.
No unnecessary fittings.
Just practical components chosen for everyday bait fishing. The extra bit of flash doesn't hurt either.
USE YOUR PREFERRED SINKER
Different fishing locations call for different sinkers.
A sheltered estuary sand flat doesn't need the same weight as an open beach with a running sweep.
That's why the ReproBaits 2-Loop Dropper Rig features a dedicated sinker attachment loop rather than a permanently fixed sinker.
The loop allows you to attach a suitable sinker in your preferred style and weight.
Fish lighter when conditions allow.
Choose more weight when:
-
The tidal current increases
-
The surf starts pushing your rig around
-
The wind makes casting difficult
-
You need to reach a distant gutter
-
You want to keep your bait positioned on the bottom in one place
Whether you prefer a ball, bean, star or other compatible sinker you can adapt the rig to suit your fishing conditions.
One rig. Your choice of sinker.
HOW TO FISH THE RIG
1. Connect the rig
Attach the top of the rig securely to your main fishing line using a suitable connection. Tying a snap swivel to your mainline is a good way to change out rigs nd to stow away rigs while traveling or moving spots.
2. Choose your sinker
Attach your preferred sinker to the dedicated bottom loop.
Use enough weight to maintain contact with the bottom without unnecessarily overloading your setup.
3. Bait both hooks
Thread your chosen whiting bait onto the #4 long-shank hooks.
Beachworms, pipis, nippers and small pieces of prawn are all good starting points.
4. Cast into likely feeding areas
Look for:
-
Beach gutters
-
Sandy drop-offs
-
Estuary channels
-
Sand flat edges
-
River mouths
-
Tidal current lines
-
Sandy patches beside seagrass beds
5. Let the bait work
Allow the sinker to settle and keep enough contact with your line to notice bites.
Whiting can bite quickly but they can also take time to find a bait.
If nothing is happening try another patch of sand, adjust your casting distance or move along the beach.
Finding the fish is often the most important part.
