Billabong Bubbler Topwater Popper

The Billabong Bubbler is a compact surface popper for fishing shallow flats, estuaries, creeks, lakes and protected coastal water.

Its cupped face pushes water and creates a visible splash when twitched. It can be worked aggressively when fish are actively feeding or slowed down with longer pauses when the water is calm and the fish are cautious.

The lure is suitable for targeting bream, whiting, Australian bass, estuary perch and small trevally on light spinning tackle.

Where to Fish It

Cast the Billabong Bubbler around:

• Shallow sand and weed flats
• Oyster racks
• Mangrove edges
• Rock walls
• Moored boats
• Creek banks
• Fallen timber
• Areas where prawns or small baitfish are moving on the surface

Surface fishing is generally most productive early in the morning, late in the afternoon and during other low-light periods. It can also work throughout the day around shade, structure or visible surface activity.

How to Retrieve It

Start with the rod tip down and use short movements of the rod to make the cupped face splash.

Try one of these simple retrieves:

• Two or three short pops followed by a pause
• Small twitches with longer pauses between movements
• A steady series of pops when fish are actively chasing bait
• A slow retrieve across shallow water with occasional pauses

Do not rush to strike when a fish hits the lure. Wait until you feel the weight of the fish before lifting the rod and beginning the retrieve.

Suggested Tackle

The Billabong Bubbler is intended for light spinning tackle. A 2500–3000 size spinning reel, light graphite rod and approximately 6–10lb leader will suit most bream, whiting and bass applications.

Use a heavier or more abrasion-resistant leader when fishing close to oyster racks, rocks, timber and other sharp structure.
