Each kit contains a reusable slide bait mechanism with sinker/weight ring plus three pre-tied 1 metre live bait leaders. Each made from 50lb monofilament and fitted with a single 8/0 hook for live bait presentation.

The single-hook leader is designed for presenting live yakka, mullet and other baitfish while allowing the bait plenty of freedom to swim naturally.

Instead of casting the live bait itself the angler casts the weighted main rig first. The slide mechanism is then attached to the main line and the bait is worked down towards the anchored sinker. It can't come back up by design. The bait slides and swims toward the sinker naturally.

This makes slide baiting particularly useful from Australian beaches, rock ledges and headlands where larger live baits would otherwise be difficult to cast effectively.

The ReproBaits Slide Bait Rig is suited for live baitfish such as:

Why use a slide bait rig?

The main advantage of slide bait fishing is that you do not have to cast the live bait together with the sinker. More delicate baits like garfish can be put out there as far as you can cast without getting bashed and beaten when it hits the water.

This has several benefits.

Keep live bait in better condition

Casting a yakka or mullet together with a heavy surf sinker can injure or kill the bait.

With a slide rig the sinker is cast first and then the bait is sent down the line afterwards.

Use larger live baits

Because you are not trying to aerodynamically cast the bait, larger yakkas, mullet and similar baitfish can be presented naturally. Even large slimey mackerel can be slipped out on a sliding bait rig.

Reach deeper water

Slide baiting can be particularly useful from beaches, rocks and headlands where deeper water lies beyond the normal live-bait casting zone.

Natural presentation

The single 8/0 hook and 1 metre leader give the live bait room to move without the bulk of a complicated multi-hook rig.

How to use a slide bait rig

1. Cast your sinker

Set up your main line with the included ring stopper. Tie on a short loop of weaker monofilament and attach that to the ring and the other end to your sinker. This is a rotten bottom or sacrificial weak link in case your weight gets snagged.

Cast the sinker into your chosen fishing area and allow it to anchor securely.

2. Tighten the main line

Wind up the slack so there is a reasonably direct line between your rod tip and sinker.

This gives the slide mechanism a path down towards the water and sinker.

3. Attach the slide

Attach the reusable ReproBaits slide mechanism to the main line. Simply open up the snap and thread the line through the winding and close it up.

4. Attach a pre-tied leader

Connect one of the supplied 50lb, 1 metre live bait leaders to the slide. There's an easy as snap swivel to connect or change leades quickly.

5. Rig your live bait

Hook your yakka, mullet or other live bait using the 8/0 hook.

Hook placement will depend on how you want the bait to swim and the conditions being fished.

Common positions include around the shoulder/back or through a suitable area near the nose provided the bait can still breathe and swim effectively.

6. Send the bait down the line

Let the rig go and let it slide out towards your sinker. Wave, current, or the livebait will work the bait slide progressively down the taut main line until it reaches the final fishing position. You are fishing the entire way out with a livie.

Maintain appropriate line tension and ensure the slide has travelled down.

Why 50lb leader?

The supplied 50lb monofilament leader provides a useful balance between strength and bait presentation.

It is heavy enough for many Australian land-based snapper, kingfish and mulloway situations while remaining manageable enough for live yakkas and mullet to swim naturally.

For exceptionally large tailor or other toothy fish anglers may choose to replace the supplied leader with a wire trace.

That is another advantage of this kit: the slide mechanism is reusable so anglers can attach different leaders according to the species and conditions.

Why a single 8/0 hook?

The single-hook design keeps the leader simple and gives the live bait maximum freedom. It is a more natural presentation than double hooked dead cut bait.

An 8/0 hook provides the gape required for commonly used live baits such as yakkas and mullet while remaining suitable for larger predators including snapper, kingfish and mulloway.

It also avoids unnecessarily loading a live bait with multiple hooks.
