CATCH THE BAIT BEFORE YOU CHASE THE FISH.

Sometimes the first fish you need to catch isn't the one you've come for.

A school of yakkas under a wharf. Garfish working a berley trail. Herring feeding along the rocks.

That's where a small hook, a small piece of bait and a light presentation can be all you need.

ReproBaits #6 and #8 baitfish hooks are made for exactly that job — catching small saltwater baitfish cleanly and simply.

No complicated rig required.

Just bait the hook, put it where the fish are feeding and start filling the bait bucket.

SMALL HOOK. SMALL BAIT. NATURAL PRESENTATION.

Yakka, garfish and herring spend plenty of time picking at tiny food items.

Put a big hook and a lump of bait in front of them and they'll often nibble around it.

A smaller #6 or #8 hook lets you use a little piece of:

  • Prawn
  • Pilchard
  • Squid
  • Fish flesh
  • Bread
  • Other suitable small baits

The hook and bait can then drift more naturally through the feeding fish instead of looking like something they have to work around.

#6 OR #8 — WHICH ONE?

Size #6

The best all-round choice when you're targeting:

  • Yakka / yellowtail scad
  • Australian herring
  • Larger garfish
  • General small saltwater baitfish

If you only want to carry one size, start here.

Size #8

Go smaller when:

  • The baitfish are small
  • Bites are missed
  • You're using very small pieces of bait
  • You want an even finer presentation

For anglers who regularly catch their own bait keeping a packet of both sizes in the tackle box covers most situations.

FISH THEM LIGHT

These hooks don't need an elaborate setup.

Unweighted

One of the simplest ways to catch yakkas and other baitfish.

Add a tiny piece of bait and let it drift naturally through a berley trail.

Under a float

Ideal for garfish, herring aka tommy ruff and schooling baitfish when you want to control the depth.

Keep the float light enough to register small bites.

With a small split shot

Add a little weight when current, wind or depth makes an unweighted bait difficult to control.

The idea is still the same:

Keep the presentation as light as the conditions allow.

WHERE TO USE THEM

Keep a packet handy when fishing around:

  • Wharves
  • Jetties
  • Pontoons
  • Harbour walls
  • Rock ledges
  • Beaches
  • Estuaries
  • Harbours

A little berley can bring the baitfish to you.

Then it's just a matter of getting a small bait in amongst them.

CATCH FRESH BAIT WHERE YOU FISH

Yakka, garfish and herring aren't only good light-tackle fun.

Where regulations allow, they can also provide fresh bait for larger fish.

Use them as:

  • Live bait
  • Whole dead bait
  • Fillet bait
  • Strip bait
  • Cut bait

So instead of arriving with nothing but frozen bait, a small packet of hooks gives you the option of catching something fresh at the spot.

A packet of small hooks doesn't take up much room in the tackle box.

But when the yakkas turn up beneath the wharf or the garfish start working the berley trail, you'll be glad they're there.

Small hook. Small bait. Fresh bait ready to fish.
