Model Letters Explained:
-
A = Direct Wind: These reels have a straightforward, direct wind mechanism. No drag system, just simple and reliable.
-
B = Graphite Back Plates: The "B" series features graphite back plates, making these reels lighter and more resistant to corrosion. Ideal for situations where weight matters, like long fishing sessions.
-
C = Non Reverse Star Drag: "C" denotes reels equipped with either a star or lever drag system, giving you more control over your drag line tension.
-
D = Direct Drag Handles on Spool: "D" denotes modern reels with a one way drag. The modern ROCKHOPPER like the 65DS is a one way drag reel.
-
E = Rock Fishing Reels: These reels, also known as ROCKHOPPER reels, are designed for rock fishing. They feature larger handles attached directly to the spool, making it easier to lift fish from rocks.
-
G = Graphite Spool: These reels have a lightweight graphite spool. More modern reels are made with graphite spools.
-
L = Lever Drag: Specifically designed for precision, the "L" series includes reels with a lever drag system, allowing for more nuanced adjustments.
-
RR Series (Rapid Retrieve): These reels have a special bracket that moves the handle closer to the reel's center, increasing winding speed. This feature is only on one of the handles, allowing you to torque with the outside handle for more power.
-
S = Stainless Steel Backing Plate/ Signature Series: These reels typically have a stainless steel backing plate. The new ROCKHOPPER series like the 65DS has a stainless steel backing plate. This can also denote the Signature Series where Bruce's signature is engraved on the backing plate of graphite models as well.
- T = Turbo: These reels have a longer mounting swivel moving the rod down from the reel. This improves casting distance by preventing line slap. It also makes it easier to hold the reel and rod.
- Ti = Titanium: These reels have a titanium backing plate.
-
V = Vented Spool: The "V" series features vented spools, which reduce weight and allow the reel to dry out faster after use.
-
3 = Wooden Spool: Older spools were wooden. In the 60s fibreglass spools started becoming popular and replaced the wooden reels.
-
5 = Fibreglass Spool: Spool is fibreglass. Often seen on the 550 Surf reels.
Number Series Explained:
- The numbers (e.g., 45, 55, 65, 500, 550, 650, 700) generally indicate the diameter of the reel in inches. For example:
-
650C: This reel is 6.5 inches across the face and includes a star or lever drag system.
-
700 Series: Reels in this series are 7 inches across, making them larger and suited for surf fishing.
Personal Preferences and Recommendations:
-
Surf Fishing: I prefer the stainless steel-backed 700 series surf reels. Their weight helps counterbalance during long, powerful casts, offering a more stable and controlled experience.
-
Rock Fishing or Luderick Fishing: For these, I prefer the graphite-backed reels because they are lighter and more comfortable to hold during long periods. If the reel will be sitting in a rod holder, weight isn’t as much of a concern, but for active fishing, lighter reels make a difference.
-
General Preference: Overall, I lean towards the older stainless steel-backed reels for their durability and substantive feel, especially in heavier fishing conditions.
This guide should help you better understand the Alvey sidecast reel model numbers and choose the right reel for your fishing needs.
